If you have spent any amount of time scrolling through Facebook or TikTok  you’ve either read stories or watched  videos of  sad kitties coming up to a human, asking for a handout and maybe a new home. You may wonder to yourself “how did this kitty know that this was the right person to approach?” Or you might have walked past a pet store where they were advertising an”adoption” event and you were somehow pulled into the store and found yourself facing a wall of cages populated by cats of all sizes, ages and attitudes. And you might find yourself making eye contact with a tortie or a Persian or even a Maine Coon.

You want to walk away but find that you just can’t leave without taking another look at that one particular cat.

How does this happen? What caused that human to walk down that street at just the moment where the cat piteously cried out for help?  Why did you enter the pet store? Why are you staring into the tortie’s eyes?

The answer is the Cat Distribution System. This is a network of cats that work together to ensure there are homes for kitties.  They keep track of upcoming births; they monitor urban cat population and potential cat people.  Yes, they keep track of those homes where a kitty or two would be welcome.

The demographic information is  passed along to senior cats who evaluate both kitties as well as potential hosts and work out scenarios that will bring the cat and the human together.  Once the cat stares into your eyes and triggers a flood of emotions you are hooked and the CDS chalks up another success.

So when you are out walking and a cat sits down in front of you and cries out with a sad meow you have been identified by the CDS team and your life has just been changed.
